Remembering Ugandan Gay Rights Activist David Kato

On the 26th of January, a crowd of around 100 LGBTQ rights activists and other supporters gathered in Uganda to pay tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of equality for all - the late David Kato.

“We are here to celebrate and thank God for our beloved friend and human rights activist David Kato,” said former Anglican LGBTQ rights campaigner Christopher Senyonjo.

Former South African president Thabo Mbeki, fellow Ugandan gay rights activist Frank Mugisha and Ugandan feminist and lawyer Sylvia Tamale also payed tribute to the extraordinary life of Mr. Kato. 

A year ago, prominent Ugandan gay rights activist and SMUG (Sexual Minorities Uganda) advocacy officer David Kato was beaten to death with a hammer in his home by Enoch Nsubuga who claimed that Kato had made unwanted sexual advances toward him.

However, shortly before this gruesome murder, a local Ugandan newspaper had published anti-homosexual propaganda exposing over 100 people suspected to be ‘homos’, and demanded that they be ‘hanged’. 

Last year, a Ugandan court sentenced Nsubuga to 30 years in jail for the death of David Kato.
